On a day where a lot was discussed about Broadcast Journalism, the students of M.S. in Communication had a fitting Chief Guest for their Media Conclave session in R.J Punitha. On a platform where ideas meet application, the yet another session of Media Conclave produced some quality debate on the existing scenario of Reality Shows in Indian Television. Sanesh Mathew began the session with an interesting research on how Reality Shows are drifting towards the lines of Daily Soaps, having only little difference to separate the two concepts. Analysing the research topic further, he found that because of the emotional content in the shows, along with the fictionalised method of hosting the show makes it very similar to any other daily soap. Following with another equally interesting research was Shayne, who presented his paper on how Reality Shows have taken over the essential nature of music itself, as the popularity of music has not seen any drastic change. This elucidates the fact that music, being available in various other medium, is less in demand through reality shows.
Common Man’s Connect
Hritika came up with her work on how common relates to reality shows and what are the driving forces behind this phenomenon. The research revealed that, it was not the presence of a celebrity, which influenced common audience to get more familiar and acquainted with reality shows, but it was the presence of common people which made the difference. People easily relate to the shows due to the presence of common audience, as he or she feels that it is easier to understand the decisions, acts and achievements done by the common people as participants.
